Carragher talks up 'captain' Gerrard

by Setanta Staff , 10 February 2012

Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher insists team-mate Steven Gerrard should be handed the England captaincy.

The search is on for a new England captain after John Terry was stripped of the armband by the FA, resulting in the resignation of Fabio Capello as manager of the national side.

A decision on the new captain will not be made until a new manager is in place but a number of names have been suggested, including Rio Ferdinand, Joe Hart and Scott Parker.

However, Carragher insists Gerrard is the right man for the job, as the veteran midfielder has experience leading the Liverpool side in some huge games, including Champions League finals.

He told the club's official website: "Steven Gerrard is the stand-out captain, and that's not a biased verdict.

"He's been the captain of Liverpool for probably a decade.

"He's captained in Champions League finals, Europe, big Premier League games.

"He's also captained England in the last World Cup and he's one of England's best players. For me, I don't think there's a debate.

"It should be Steven Gerrard without a shadow of a doubt."
