Gomes is smiling again

by Alex Livie , 29 November 2008

Heurelho Gomes feels he has turned a corner at Tottenham and is determined to prove he is no £8 million flop.

The Brazilian has been the butt of jokes up and down the country following a string of blunders in the opening weeks of the season.

Gomes’ position was weakened further following the departure of coach Juande Ramos, but a lack of options prompted new boss Harry Redknapp to keep faith with the keeper.

The 27-year-old has kept clean sheets in his last couple of games and feels he is now on the same wavelength as his defenders.

“I have been shouting louder at the defenders,” said Gomes. “The communication is much better and I understand what they want.

“I am very happy about the last two games, the results are really good for the team’s confidence and to keep two clean sheets is very good for me.

“Once more I am smiling. I like to smile but at the start there were problems, although step-by-step my confidence is coming back.

“I am very strong in my heart as I know I’m a good goalkeeper. The time now is very important for me and the people who have helped me so much are very important.”
