Cech has sympathy for Dowd

by Alex Livie , 23 December 2008

Petr Cech has admitted Phil Dowd had a tough decision to make when sending off John Terry on Monday.

Chelsea passed up the chance to return to the top of the table when drawing at Everton on Monday, but they were handicapped by having to play the second half with ten men following Terry’s dismissal.

Terry was shown a straight red card for a lunge at Leon Osman and Cech has told Setanta Sports that it was a tough call for the referee.

“There is a tackle and I think it is hard for the referee, as he has a split second to make the decision,” Cech told Setanta Sports. “The crowd is there, a lot of noise, and it makes it more difficult for the referee.

“He made a decision, we have to live with it. Sometimes it happens in football that you have to live with ten men.”

Chelsea will spend Christmas Day in second place behind Liverpool, but Cech feels they may look back on the Goodison Park trip as a point gained.

He added: ”It is a pity we did not win the game because we could have been top of the league again, but we can say it is a good point."
