Arsenal welcomed Gael Clichy back into the starting XI so Mikael Silvestre moved to centre back, with Kolo Toure dropping to the bench again.

The return of Emmanuel Adebayor from suspension allowed Robin van Persie to earn a rest and Arsene Wenger also brought Nicklas Bendtner in to replace the injured Alex Song.

The big talking point in the Portsmouth line-up was the decision to drop Jermain Defoe to the bench, ostensibly following the growing rumours about a possible January move away from Fratton Park. Adams also left out Glen Little from the team that lost 4-1 to West Ham, so David Nugent and Papa Bouba Diop started at Emirates Stadium.
