Diop worry for Pompey

by Alex Livie , 29 December 2008

Portsmouth came away from Arsenal with more than wounded pride, as manager Tony Adams fears midfielder Papa Bouba Diop has suffered knee ligament damage.

The Senegal star put in a superb shift at The Emirates, but appeared to damage his knee in a tackle with Denilson late on.

Richard Hughes also picked up a groin strain and both will be assessed on Monday, but Adams is far from positive about the pair.

”We will know more about Papa and Richard Hughes in the next 24 hours or so, but it doesn't look good at the moment,” said the Pompey chief.

”I thought Papa was immense in there. He is so powerful, but it looks like he has done his medial ligament so that's not too great for us.

”And Richard Hughes has done his groin as well, but I'll get on with it.”

Fingers were pointed at David James for William Gallas’ winner, but Adams has defended the England keeper.

”Goalkeepers are in a really difficult position,” said Adams. “You have to run the risk of making mistakes in that position because you have got no one to cover you.

“He has made a magnificent save just before the goal. He is one v one and it was a fantastic save, great goalkeeping.”
