Ben Foster says he will be equal to the task if Manchester United decide to play him in the Carling Cup final on Sunday.
The 25-year-old has every right to think he will start at Wembley against the holders Tottenham, as Sir Alex Ferguson has made him the regular custodian of the No. 1 jersey during their run to yet another cup final.
Edwin van der Sar is the undoubted top dog in the goalkeeping department at Old Trafford and when the Dutchman decides to call it a day, some observers feel Foster will usurp Tomasz Kuszczak in the pecking order.
Foster’s cause has not been helped following a considerable list of injuries which have stymied the player since his return from a loan spell at Watford, but the first domestic showpiece of the season can be a catalyst for the goalkeeper.
“Sunday could be a stage for me to remind people what I’m about,” Foster said in the Sun.
“My England debut was a big one for me and I played in a play-off final so I have some big matches under my belt.
“I dealt with those games reasonably well, so, hopefully, this will not be any different.
“I had a reputation as a decent up-and-coming keeper and in the last couple of years, because of circumstances, I have almost faded away.
“Now I seem to be putting a run of fitness together. I’m training every day, my body feels good and I’m playing the odd first-team game.
“Sunday will be a good chance to get my name back out there and people can see that I am still around and still a good goalkeeper.”
