Sir Alex Ferguson said after lifting the Carling Cup that he hopes playing extra time will not damage Manchester United’s main objectives this season.
After winning the Community Shield and Club World Cup, United clinched their third trophy of the season as they beat Tottenham 4-1 on penalties on Sunday after it had remained goalless in 120 minutes of action.
And while Ferguson was happy that his team is still on course to win four major trophies, he admits he was disappointed with the manner of the win.
"We could have done without extra time to be honest and I suppose Tottenham will be saying the same," he told Sky Sports.
"There'll be some tired legs and I need them to freshen up.
"The league's a priority, and the Champions League as well."
United’s title hopes received another boost this weekend as Liverpool lost and both Aston Villa and Arsenal drew, and Ferguson admits he was delighted to see them struggle – even if he is wary of dropping points at Newcastle on Wednesday.
“It’s a good weekend in the sense that you like your opponents to drop points,” he said.
“I don’t think anyone’s any different – when your immediate opponents drop points, you’re delighted. It’s a horrible game that way.
“But we could drop points on Wednesday and our opponents could win their games. Who knows?”
