Dirk Kuyt has told Liverpool he is ready and willing to sign a new contract at Anfield as soon as the club end the uncertainty surrounding Rafa Benitez’s position by tying the manager to a new deal.
Kuyt’s current contract expires at the end of next season and the Holland international has been told by Benitez that his unstinting efforts since his arrival from Feyenoord in 2006 have merited an improved deal.
But the contract that commands the most column inches on Merseyside at present is that of the manager as Benitez has refused to put pen to paper until he gains the control over the management of the club that he desires.
Kuyt admits his own situation is a low priority but the forward-cum-winger, who has scored 22 goals in 94 Premier League appearances for The Reds, appears ready to commit his future to the club as soon as permitted.
“The signs are positive, but I think it is more important for the club to first establish the contract of the manager,” Kuyt told Sportweek.
“If the club decides to offer me a new contract, I would be very happy.
“Better clubs than Liverpool in Europe are limited.”
Kuyt put in a typically busy display in Tuesday’s remarkable 4-0 win over Real Madrid, setting up the first goal for Fernando Torres as The Reds stormed to the quarter finals of the Champions League.
But it was the performance of fellow Dutchman Ryan Babel that pleased Kuyt as the former Ajax star took advantage of only his 13th start in all competitions this season to remind Benitez of his quality.
"Everyone knows how important Gerrard and Torres are to the team but Babel had a great performance and put in a great assist for Stevie," added the Dutchman.
"He was also involved in Dossena's goal. He's worked really hard over the past couple of weeks, so deserves all the credit he's going to get.
"I don't know whether or not it's the best we've played since I've been here, but if you beat Real Madrid 5-0 overall it's great and hopefully it will prove to be one of our biggest results."
