Ligue 1 round-up: L'OM go top

by Laurent Picard , 21 March 2009

Marseille moved top in Ligue 1 and Bordeaux second on Saturday night.

L’OM failed to find the recipe for goals in the first half against Nantes, but turned their fortunes around after the break, with Boudewijn Zenden offering a perfect set-piece to Renato Civelli and Brandao heading home from close range (2-0), live on Setanta Sports.

Laurent Blanc’s Bordeaux hammered Le Havre 3-0 at Stade Jules-Deschaseaux to go second, level on points with Lyon.

France playmaker Yoann Gourcuff superbly opened the scoring in the first half and was followed by Souleymane Diawara, who powerfully headed home a corner after the break. Brazilian ace Wendel killed the match off a minute before the final whistle with a direct set-piece.

Lille keep on impressing, and Rudy Garcia’s team are still involved in the title race after a well-deserved 2-1 win over Grenoble claimed on home soil.

Man-of-the-moment Michel Bastos converted a spot-kick and Robert Vittek scored a second before the break for LOSC, before Sandy Paillot bagged a consolation.

Rennes continue to drop points, with the Brittany-based side conceding a goalless draw with Valenciennes. Both teams had a player dismissed: Kader Mangane in the first half for Stade Rennais and Carlos Sanchez in the second for VA.

Nice claimed a last-gasp draw against Caen in their Stade du Ray, courtesy of veteran Olivier Echouafni, after Loic Remy opened the scoring for Les Aiglons, but Vincent Hognon scored an own goal and Nicolas Seube gave his team the lead.

Auxerre, who sensationally beat Lyon at Stade Gerland last week, claimed a second consecutive victory, this time against an uninspired Le Mans side 2-0, with Ireneusz Jelen and Dariusz Dudka on target.

And finally Monaco bagged a shock win at Nancy thanks to Park Chu-young's decisive header in the 70th minute.
