Burley has 'no problem' with Rangers duo

by Gordon Pope , 02 April 2009

Scotland coach George Burley insists that Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor still have a future in his side.

The Rangers pair were dropped to the substitutes' bench for the win over Iceland, with the former Ipswich manager saying that the incident is dealt with in his opinion and he has no issues with them.

“I haven’t got any problem,” Burley said after the 2-1 victory. “The most important thing was the squad and we kept them all together because the squad wanted it and that was very important not to change it around. So I haven’t got a problem.”

He continued: “Things have happened and they’re dealt with. After the game they might have the odd drink or whatever but we’ve dealt with the situation.

“We’ll move on and as I say the most important thing was the game and we got three points.

“When you are making big decisions you are there to be shot down if it doesn’t work,” he added. “I thought it worked tonight, I thought the tactics, the players, and the combinations were excellent.

“It doesn’t always work, I wish it did, but I thought tonight we got it spot on.”

Scotland dominated Olafur Johannesson’s side for long spells of the match at Hampden and the 52-year-old was delighted with his players.

He explained: “I’m very pleased, I felt we battled away. The second game is always the toughest in international football. In Saturday’s game in Holland we did a lot of chasing but overall I think we deserved the three points.

“There was some exceptional individual performances, especially from one or two of our young players, so I think that’s very encouraging for the future and it keeps everything alive which was so important tonight.

“Tonight was about getting the three points but you’ve got to make decisions, pick the team, pick the formation, pick the squad and you hope it works out.

“So I think you’ve got to be bold, tonight wasn’t a night to be cautious and I think it paid off. There are a lot of positives and a lot of bonuses, but the key think, whatever was going to happen, was the three points.

“It keeps our dreams alive as far as qualification.”
