Setback for Mac at NEC

by setanta.com staff , 03 April 2009

FC Twente’s hopes of holding onto second spot in De Eredivisie suffered a setback on Friday night when NEC Nijmegen struck late to hold the visitors to a 1-1 draw.

Steve McClaren’s side had taken the lead when Marko Arnautovic struck after 23 minutes at De Goffert.

John Goosens replied with 12 minutes remaining though and while NEC were later reduced to ten men when Youssef El Akchaoui saw red, Twente were unable to take advantage in what remained of the game.

The result leaves FC Twente in second but just four points ahead of Marco van Basten’s Ajax, who now have a game in hand.

AZ Alkmaar also have a game in hand and enjoy an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
