Scots give booze brothers the V-sign

by Gordon Pope , 03 April 2009

Rangers have confirmed that Allan McGregor and Barry Ferguson have been suspended for two weeks without pay by the club, while The SFA have revealed the pair will not play again for Scotland.

The duo were sent home from training on Friday morning before returning for a meeting where their fate was decided, with the pair receiving the maximum sanction possible following their drinking session and subsequent behaviour during Scotland's win over Iceland and Ferguson being stripped of the captaincy.

Both players indluged a lengthy drinking binge prior to the qualifier and were then spotted making crude gestures as they sat on the bench at Hampden Park.

“The overall conduct of the players during the last week while on Scotland duty has, regrettably, fallen considerably short of the standards expected by Rangers Football Club and our supporters and has brought the club into disrepute,” chief executive Martin Bain said in a statement on the Rangers official website.

“The management of the club has taken the view that this has damaged both Rangers and Scotland and is unacceptable. Even though the club is entering the critical stage of the league season and the later stages of The Scottish Cup, appropriate disciplinary action was required.”

But while the pair will miss two weeks for the club, their international careers look to have ended, with an SFA spokesman confirming they will not be involved for the national side.

“In light of the events of the past 48 hours and following further discussions between the national team manager and the chief executive, it has been decided that Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor will no longer be considered for international selection by Scotland,” the spokesman said.

"This action has been taken in the best interest of the squad, the fans and the country. We are determined to qualify for the World Cup and we must ensure that nothing is allowed to distract us from achieving this goal."
