Shameful Gers pair say sorry

by Gordon Pope , 03 April 2009

Rangers pair Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor have apologised after being suspended by their club and told they will not play for Scotland again.

The two players caused a storm after a drinking session last week reportedly led to an argument with George Burley, with the duo seen flashing the ‘V sign’ during the win over Iceland.

It is the behaviour while on the bench on Wednesday night that led to the disciplinary procedure from Rangers and the pair spoke of their shame in a statement on the club's official website.

“I deeply regret what happened last weekend and the event during the last week and apologise wholeheartedly for the embarrassment caused to Scotland, Rangers, both sets of supporters and my friends and family,” Ferguson said.

“I have always considered playing for Rangers and Scotland an honour and a privilege and nothing will change that and I am bitterly disappointed by the announcement that I will not be selected for Scotland again.”

His sentiments were echoed by team-mate McGregor who will not add to his four international caps.

The 27-year-old said: “I was absolutely delighted to be selected for Scotland last weekend and I am deeply sorry over what has happened since then.

“We all make mistakes in life and I am very disappointed to have let Rangers, Scotland, my family and all the fans down.

“I am also desperately disappointed that I will not be selected against for Scotland at this stage of my career.”
