Mendes backing Porto to beat United

by Adam Marshall , 14 April 2009

Pedro Mendes reckons Porto can beat Manchester United and go on to win the Champions League.

The Rangers midfielder is convinced his former club have what it takes to dump the holders out of the competition on Wednesday night.

After a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, the Portuguese league leaders fancy their chances of completing the job on the back of their two away goals in Manchester.

"Yeah, I would bet my own money on it," he told Jornal de Noticias. "Porto have good spirit and are a team that is organised and attack well.

"They can create danger as we saw at Old Trafford.

"This is an excellent opportunity for Porto to reach the semi-finals.

"If Porto can get through this round, they can be European champions again because they have proved their quality.

"Manchester will take the game to them from the first minute. They are a side characterised by having a lot of possession and making a lot of quick breaks.

"They have the players to do it like Cristiano Ronaldo, Ryan Giggs and Park Ji-sung.

"Their attack is world class and they can win any game.

"But history can repeat itself [from 2004 when Jose Mourinho's side knocked United out en route to lifting the trophy].

"And, if we talk about Manchester United as the European champions then why can't Porto go on and win it?"
