Leadbitter ready for game of his life

by Ben Blackmore , 16 April 2009

“The biggest game in a decade”. That is how Grant Leadbitter labelled Sunderland’s forthcoming six-pointer with Hull.

Only two points separate the two sides ahead of the weekend, and Sunderland know that defeat could leave them in the drop zone come Sunday evening as Newcastle visit Tottenham.

11 years ago Sunderland were preparing for a play-off final against a Charlton, a game they ended up losing 7-6 on penalties to miss out on Premier League football.

Now the stakes are just as high again, and Leadbitter is making no effort to play things down.

“It is the biggest game since the play-off final back in the 90s. It is the biggest game I can remember,” Leadbitter said in The Daily Miror.

“It is a massive game for the club, it’s a six-pointer and we have to win. We need to do it for everyone at the club. We’ve got to win – simple as that.”

Meanwhile, Teemu Tainio is determined to help play a part in Sunderland’s survival mission after fearing he wouldn’t play again this season.

"It is a bit of a surprise that I'm able to play. I saw the stories that my season was finished and it wasn't an exaggeration,” the Finn told The Sunderland Echo.

"We couldn't solve my knee injury with just treatment and two weeks ago we had the operation booked and everything. Don't ask me exactly what was wrong – it was a bone problem in my left knee, but I'm not a doctor so I'm not sure exactly what the problem is.

"Suddenly it started getting better with the treatment, so it's a real relief. It feels good and strong now and I'm happy to get a game under my belt.

"Hopefully I can stay healthy and help the club keep its place in The Premier League, and then look forward to a better season next season."
