Eredivisie: AZ crowned in Holland

by setanta.com staff , 19 April 2009

AZ Alkmaar were confirmed as Eredivisie champions despite not playing on Sunday, as their only potential remaining challengers Ajax were heavily defeated by PSV Eindhoven.

Louis van Gaal's AZ could have clinched the title on Saturday but surprisingly lost to Vitesse Arnhem, meaning Ajax had to win to keep up any pretence of a challenge.

But the Amsterdam side were hammered 6-2 at rivals PSV, meaning AZ top the Dutch league for the first time since 1981 and for only the second time in their history.

Ajax are now one point behind Steve McClaren’s third-placed FC Twente after a damaging defeat at the Philips Stadion.

Edison Mendez (22), Ibrahim Affelay (31), Nordin Amrabat (41), Jason Culina (57), Balazs Dzsudzsak (66) and Otman Bakkal (90) scored for PSV while Luis Suarez (43) and Miralem Sulejmani replied for Ajax.

Heerenveen missed the chance to close in on Ajax in third place in De Eredivisie when falling to a 2-1 defeat at FC Utrecht.

Heerenveen could have closed the gap to three points and took the lead through Paulo Henrique after only three minutes.

But goals from Michael Silberbauer (7) and Gregoor van Dijk (penalty, 89) handed the home side victory.

At the bottom of the table, FC Voldendam moved out of 18th place and automatic relegation following a 3-0 home win over Sparta Rotterdam.

Rowin van Zaanen (33), Paul de Lange (pen, 56) and Gerson Sheotahul (87) scored the goals.

ADO Den Haag are just a point above Volendam after drawing 3-3 at Willem II.

The visitors raced into a three-goal lead through Karim Soltani (5, 28) and Richard Knopper (52) but Willem II scored three goals in six second-half minutes through Mohamed Messoudi (71), Frank Demouge (72) and George Mourad (77).
