Burley promotes Marshall

by Brian Etherson , 29 April 2009

Scotland manager George Burley has confirmed that Norwich City goalkeeper David Marshall has been promoted to ‘reserve’ goalkeeper.

Burley made the admission when asked if the former Celtic goalkeeper was being rewarded for his patience and understanding while the booze-gate affair was very much in the public eye.

“David has been involved with every squad I’ve been manager [of],” said Burley. “He hasn’t had a full game, he hasn’t been a part of it, and so this gives him the opportunity to play international football.

“He will be my number two choice now, so it’s ideal for him to get an international game under his belt.”

However, while doing so, Burley also reiterated that he wants players who want to play for Scotland all the time and has possibly left the door open for Rangers striker Kris Boyd to return to the international set-up.

He said: “I think the decisions have made about a number of things.

“Kris made the decision and it’s up to him to change whatever.

“As I say we have been tested a number of times, but the key thing for me – for Scotland – is that everybody is desperate to play for their country and focused, because if we don’t have that we don’t have anything.”
