Marco van Basten has resigned as Ajax boss after a disappointing first season in charge at the Amsterdam Arena.
The Holland legend, 44, parted ways with his national team to become Ajax boss last summer, but he has failed to match his employers’ season targets.
As a result, he has taken the decision to move on from the club with immediate effect.
A club statement read: “Marco van Basten and general director Rik van den Boog have decided to part ways with Ajax.
“The principal reason for this decision is their failure to reach their objectives and they did not feel they could continue next season.
“Assistant coach John van’t Schip will be in charge of the last game of the season against FC Twente.”
Ajax are third in Eredivisie and have missed out on the chance to catch a Champions League spot this season, with Louis van Gaal’s AZ Alkmaar winning the league and Steve McClaren’s FC Twente claiming the second spot.
