Ajax deny Villa approach for defender

by Toby Davis , 14 May 2009

Aston Villa have been strongly linked with a move for Ajax defender Thomas Vermaelen but the Dutch club insist they are yet to receive an approach from the Midlanders.

Martin O’Neill was in Amsterdam at the weekend on a scouting mission and it is widely thought he was keeping a close eye on the Belgium international.

But when asked about reported interest from the Premier League side, Ajax technical director Danny Blind said: “Aston Villa have not contacted us.”

Vermaelen, 23, has played 85 games in five seasons for Ajax and has been capped 13 times by his country.

O’Neill confirmed he was on the continent over the weekend but was remaining tight-lipped about his targets.

"I can confirm that I was abroad watching football matches but I will confirm nothing else," he said.

"I will be abroad on Wednesday too."
