Heerenveen won the Dutch Cup for the first time in their history when defeating Steve McClaren’s FC Twente 5-4 on penalties on Sunday night.
After the game finished 1-1 in normal time and 2-2 after extra time, Twente star Youssouf Hersi was the only man to miss from 12 yards to condemn his side to defeat.
Goran Popov put Heerenveen in front after 28 minutes before Eljero Elia equalised for Twente just ten minutes after half-time.
Bonaventure Kalou looked to have won it for Heerenveen when netting in the second half of extra time but Hersi took the game to penalties with a late leveller.
The midfielder’s joy soon turned to despair though when he was the only player to fail in the shoot-out, allowing former Sheffield Wednesday striker Gerald Sibon to score the winning penalty.
Defeat will be a real setback for McClaren in his first season in Holland but the former England manager did lead Twente to the Champions League thanks to a second-placed finish in De Eredivisie.
