Inverness were relegated from The SPL after a 1-0 defeat to Falkirk on Saturday afternoon.

The Highlanders went into the match knowing a point would keep them in the top flight, but a second-half strike from Michael Higdon kept John Hughes’ men up.

Inverness could have taken away any nervousness from the match after four minutes with Richie Foran should have scored.

The former Motherwell striker beat Gerard Aafjes to go through on goal before shooting low at Dani Mallo.

The goalkeeper easily blocked the effort, but Foran should have picked out fellow striker Dougie Imrie who was in a far better position to score.

The Highlanders were looking the livelier side and Mallo was needed to keep Falkirk in the contest after 12 minutes.

Filipe Morais danced along the by-line before cutting back to Foran eight yards from goal.

The Irishman shot first time but somehow the Spaniard reacted instantly to dive and palm the ball away for a corner.

Whatever happened, Falkirk needed a win but were struggling to even muster an attack in the first period.

Steve Lovell was picked out well by Scott Arfield early on, but the former Aberdeen star delayed his shot too long and he was eventually stopped.

But the match turned in the 38th minute when Lovell looked dangerous for the first time in the game.

The forward turned Ross Tokely to find a clear path to goal, but, before he could attack Michael Fraser’s goal, Lovell was dragged down by the defender.

Tokely could have no complaints about the decision, however the dismissal only served to bring Falkirk into a game that was moving out of their reach before the interval.

The frantic match remained as intense after the break with both teams scrapping it out in the middle of the park.

Substitute Mark Stewart was unlucky not to open the scoring in the 59th minute when he latched on to a long ball forward.

The striker tried to lob the out-coming Fraser, but Pavels Mihadjuks managed to get on to the line to clear.

The breakthrough finally came for The Bairns in the 67th minute when Michael Higdon outmuscled Mihadjuks to score.

Veteran defender Jackie McNamara crossed perfectly into the six-yard box and the big Englishman was on hand to burst Inverness’ survival hopes.

Pat Cregg almost secured the points in the 73rd minute when his swerving effort from 25 yards beat Fraser, but dropped just wide of the post.

Terry Butcher sent for reinforcements as they searched for the crucial equaliser, with Eric Odhiambo and Andrew Barrowman joining proceedings.

But the pair could not turn the tide and Falkirk should have put the game beyond Inverness when Carl Finnigan missed an absolute sitter with five minutes remaining.

Stewart’s low cross was begging to be tapped into the net, but somehow Finnigan put the ball over from five yards out.

As the match reached its climax, Brian Kerr and Russell Duncan both went close for Caley, but the match was destined to end in heartbreak for them.
