Inverness manager Terry Butcher has moved quickly to trim his squad after being relegated by releasing seven players.
The Highlanders were sent down to The First Division after losing to Falkirk on Saturday and Butcher has decided his squad it too big with Pavels Mihadjuks, Zander Sutherland, Thierry Gathuessi, Richie Byrne, Garry Wood, Iain Vigurs and Andy McNulty leaving.
“We have to cut our cloth accordingly, but we have the core of a squad there, with the 11 who are under contract,” Butcher told The Press and Journal.
“We are going to have to work with a smaller squad than before and working with a smaller budget we will need players who are more adaptable and who can play in a number of positions.
“It is disappointing to release so many players, but we had 27 in our squad which was quite big, even in The SPL.
“Expense can have much more of an effect on the squad than ability. Pavels Mihadjuks is very unlucky, as are one or two others as finance does play a part.
“The squad had to come down, it is difficult and we have one or two who have certainly done very well for us this year.
“You would like to have two players for every position and we will bring in some players from the Under-19s.
“We are fully aware there will be SPL clubs who will be offering the likes of Richie Foran, Eric Odhiambo, Brian Kerr and Filipe Morais contracts.
“We hope that having gone through four months with us, they will think it is a good environment to work in, but we can’t offer them SPL football which is extremely disappointing.
“There is no real deadline for the players to get back to us, but we start in five weeks and holidays are the priority for everyone over the next two weeks.
“We will be speaking to the players’ agents to sort something out and get moving from there.”
