Keane welcomes new players in

by Gareth Maher , 28 May 2009

Robbie Keane thinks it is crucial that the Republic of Ireland continue introducing new players to the panel.

The Tottenham Hotspur frontman will once again lead his country out when they face Nigeria in a friendly in Craven Cottage on Friday evening and will be joined in attack by Leon Best.

Best was called up to Giovanni Trapattoni's squad for the first time for this match and the Coventry City striker has been told that he will start the game.

Don't forget to watch Republic of Ireland v Nigeria on Setanta Sports 1 from 19:30 this Friday.

Keane admits to not knowing much about his new strike partner, but likes what he sees in training and hopes that he can take full advantage of the opportunity afforded to him.

Joining Best in making their debuts are Kevin Foley [Wolverhampton Wanderers], Sean St Ledger [Preston North End], Eddie Nolan [Preston North End], and Liam Lawrence [Stoke City], and Keane says that they are welcome additions to the squad.

"I haven't see much of Leon play but the last couple of days have been impressive," said Keane at a press conference on Thursday.

"He has a good touch and is a good finisher. He has the opportunity and it's up to him to take it.

"[Friday's match] gives them [the new players] a cap but you should want to win every game you play. Nobody wants to mark their first cap with a defeat so the new lads will want to impress.

"You have to give the youngsters a chance eventually. We need a few new faces because they are the future. They deserve the opportunity."
