Jol looks to restore Ajax glory

by Robin Hackett , 29 May 2009

New Ajax boss Martin Jol has told Setanta Sports that he believes the club has the potential to become great again.

Despite an impressive debut season in the Bundesliga, the former Tottenham boss, 53, left Hamburg this week to return to his homeland with the four-time European champions.

Marco van Basten resigned from the position earlier in the month after finishing third and failing to qualify for the Champions League, but Jol feels he can inspire a revival at the Amsterdam ArenA.

“I’m the most experienced coach in the Eredivisie,” he told Setanta Sports.

“Of course, I worked in England for Tottenham, in Holland for two clubs and I was in Germany, so I know everything about western Europe.

“But, for me, Ajax is an open book because everybody in Holland knows that Ajax is the biggest club in Holland, so I’m looking forward to it.

“Nowadays, they still have got a great young team, so the main thing is development and, if you develop these players, I think the results will come.”
