Rep of Ireland v Nigeria Preview

Friendly vital for Bulgaria preparations

Ahead of a crunch World Cup qualifier next week, the Republic of Ireland take on Nigeria in a friendly on Friday evening.

Manager Giovanni Trapattoni is eager to use the game as a warm-up for their Group 8 clash with Bulgaria, but also to blood some new players.

There will be five debutants in the Irish side when they come out at Craven Cottage, although the team is made up with a spine of experienced players as Robbie Keane, Richard Dunne, Shay Given, and Damien Duff will all be involved from the start.

Don't forget to watch Republic of Ireland v Nigeria on Setanta Sports 1 from 19:30 this Friday.

Amongst the new faces will be Kevin Foley, who has just finished a fine season with Wolverhampton Wanderers, where he helped them clinch promotion to the Premier League. Considered by many to be the long-term replacement for Steve Finnan, he could make the right-back spot his own if he performs well in this game.

Just in front of him on the right wing will be Stoke City's Liam Lawrence. With an excellent range of crossing and a good work ethic, he could be the answer to the team's problems on the right side of midfield - at least until Steven Reid returns.

In defence, Preston North End duo Sean St Ledger and Eddie Nolan will be rewarded for their fine form at club level as they slot in at centre-back and left-back respectively. The spotlight may spend more time following striker Leon Best (Coventry City), who has been earmarked by Trapattoni as 'one for the future'.

Best will see the injuries to Kevin Doyle, Noel Hunt, and Caleb Folan as an opportunity for him to show what he can do alongside Keane, but he will have to rely on the service from midfield with Lawrence and Duff occupying both wings.

The main objective for Trapattoni will be to see his team produce a solid performance that would in turn keep the confidence levels high ahead of the trip to Sofia next week. If some of the new players stand out, then that is a bonus.

For Shaibu Amodu's Nigeria, they will also use this match as a platform to test out some players that have been pushing for a regular place in the squad.

With a friendly against France and a World Cup qualifier against Kenya to follow this fixture, The Super Eagles will be wary of risking all of their star players. That should mean that Aberdeen youngster Sone Aluko makes his debut.

Another young player hoping to feature will be Crystal Palace's Victor Moses. Previously a star at under-age level for England, he has opted to declare for Nigeria and this could be the start of a long international career for him.

Ireland should have too much for their African opponents in this match as they are without established names like Joseph Yobo, Taye Taiwo, and John Obi Mikel. So a win for Trapattoni's men will be exactly what they need going into the biggest game of their qualifying campaign so far.

Prediction: 2-0
