Bordeaux beat Caen 1-0 on Saturday night to win Ligue 1 for the first time since 1999 and end Lyon’s seven-season dominance of the French top flight.
Laurent Blanc, in only his second season in charge, saw his side wrap up the title after Lyon’s seven successive triumphs thanks to Yoan Gouffran’s goal just after half time.
The result sees Bordeaux finish three points clear at the top but left Caen third from bottom and relegated to the second tier.
Marseille did their part to finish second, beating Rennes 4-0 thanks to two goals apiece from Bakari Kone (51, 57) and Mamadou Niang (56, 69).
St Etienne won by the same scoreline over Valenciennes through goals from Ilan (13), Bafetimbi Gomis (53, 56) and Kevin Maralas (66), meaning they are safe but Nantes are relegated.
Nantes find themselves demoted despite a 2-1 victory over Auxerre. Ivan Klasnic and Mamadou Bagayoko scored either side of Auxerre’s Jeremy Berthod in what ended up a meaningless three points.
Le Havre were long since relegated and ended their season with a whimper with a goalless draw at Nice.
Third- and fourth-placed Lyon and Toulouse also ended 0-0 to leave both sides nine and 16 points adrift of the title winners respectively.
The game of the day came at Lille, who were 3-2 winners over Nancy.
Robert Vittek (11) and Adil Rami (13) gave the hosts an early advantage that was halved before half time through Abdeslam Ouaddou.
Youssouf Hadji them drew Nancy level but Nicolas Piestan wrapped up the three points for Lille with 15 minutes remaining.
Sochaux beat Grenoble 1-0 thanks to Mevlut Erdinc’s solitary strike, Lorient and Le Mans drew 1-1 – Michael Ciani and Thorstein Helstad with the goals – while Paris Saint Germain and Monaco drew a blank.
