Setanta's end-of-season awards: Middlesbrough

by setanta.com staff , 05 June 2009

Like Darius Vassell's England career, the season is well and truly over, so it's time to dish out the end-of-season gongs.

Who made the difference in your club's season? Who lived up to all expectations like a sausage sandwich after a big night out? And who flopped like Pele without viagra?

Below, the setanta.com office has joined forces to pick our success stories and disappointments of a quite gripping campaign, feel free to congratulate us on our genius or destroy us for our cluelessness using the comments box below.

MIDDLESBROUGH

Player of the season: Tuncay
One man stood tall in a miserable season for Boro, and that was Tuncay. He had that touch of flair that lacked everywhere else in the squad, and was prepared to work hard too. Boro weren’t exactly prolific, but Tuncay chipped in with a few goals, finishing the season as their top scorer in the league with seven goals.

Young player of the season: Matthew Bates
Nowhere near the finished article, but Bates showed signs of promise in an otherwise downbeat campaign. Enjoyed his most frequented year at Boro, even scoring in the 3-1 win over Hull in April.

Best signing: N/A
Boro’s signings last summer were highly questionable. Marvin Emnes, Didier Digard, Justin Hoyte and Marlon King. All signings which offered little as Boro slid to relegation.

Worst signing: Marvin Emnes
Showed glimpses of talent but was hampered by limited opportunities. Wins the award only by virtue of the fact Afonso Alves was signed last season.

Disappointment of the season: Afonso Alves
Need we say any more?

Moment of the campaign: Win over Liverpool
A 2-0 win at The Riverside over title-chasing Liverpool in February was a false dawn, briefly lifting Boro out of the relegation zone. Still, it was a great day in a campaign which offered little else.
