Newcastle defender Jose Enrique says it is a ‘compliment’ to be linked with Spanish club Atletico.
Enrique is reviewing his situation after Newcastle’s relegation to the Championship.
It is no secret on Tyneside that Newcastle will likely have to restructure their squad as they address the issue of finances following their exit from The Premier League.
“From above [Newcastle board] have not done things well and we played a very bad season,” Enrique told Marca.
“On a personal level it is clear that the decline is very bad for me.”
Atletico have been linked with the left-back and the carrot of Champions League football at the Vicente Calderon appeals to Enrique.
“Who would not want to play at a club like Atletico? I think any player would like to play with the shirt of Rojiblanca,” added the Newcastle defender.
“I still have three years left on my contact with Newcastle, but I am very grateful and it is a compliment [to be linked with Atletico].”
