Kilbane targets Sofia upset

by Gareth Maher , 05 June 2009

Kevin Kilbane has told setanta.com that he believes Republic of Ireland can beat Bulgaria in Sofia on Saturday.

Ireland go into the game knowing that a win would dismantle Bulgaria's chances of reaching the World Cup in South Africa and that is exactly what Giovanni Trapattoni's side aim to do.

Don't forget to watch Republic of Ireland take on Bulgaria in their World Cup qualifier on Saturday, June 6 from 17:50 on Setanta Sports 2.

The underdog tag might be pinned on them, despite sitting second in Group 8, but Kilbane thinks that Ireland have enough quality to come away with all three points.

After securing a point away to Italy in their last competitive outing, The Boys in Green now believe that they have a real chance of qualifying for the World Cup.

"We have gone into every game with the mindset of winning it and I don't think that should change against Bulgaria, even though it will be a tough game," Kilbane told setanta.com

"Having played them already at home, we know what they are capable of and they will be stronger with [Dimitar] Berbatov and a few others back for them. We certainly won't be underestimating them.

"If we focus on each game as it comes we can stay in the hunt for qualifying from the group. It will be difficult to win in Sofia, but we feel that we can beat them.

"The manager has been showing us videos and giving us information on them, although we know that if we focus on our own game, we have a great chance of getting the three points."

Kilbane does not believe that the timing of the game is ideal due to it coming at the end of the season for many players, but he insists that will make too much of a difference.

Ireland remain unbeaten in the group so far and the Hull City man thinks that they can further extend that run on Saturday as they look to reclaim top spot.
