Vermaelen ready for Arsenal challenge

by Alex Livie , 08 June 2009

Thomas Vermaelen expects to make headway in his bid to join Arsenal this week, with the Belgian claiming it is an opportunity he could not pass up.

Arsene Wenger has made no secret of his desire to strengthen his defensive line and it recently emerged that Ajax skipper Vermaelen was on his radar.

Reports over the weekend claimed an £11 million deal had been thrashed out between the two clubs.

There has been no confirmation from either side, but Vermaelen has broken his silence to say he is ready for the step up to The Premier League.

”In the coming days there will be more talks,” Vermaelen told Algemeen Dagblad. “Moving to Arsenal is the right path for me.

”It is a great sporting challenge and I will also be financially better off.

”I think everything is going to be okay.”
