FC Zurich midfielder Andres Vasquez has denied saying he was set to join Stoke – but has not ruled out a move to the Britannia Stadium.
The Peruvian-born Sweden Under-21 starlet helped Zurich to the Swiss Super League title last season, but reports this week claimed he was set to move to The Premier League this summer.
However, the 21-year-old has now said the quotes about his future were fabricated and that he is unaware of any offers from Stoke.
“I read in a Peruvian newspaper that I was on my way there – that I had told Reuters that they were interested in me,” he told Fotbollskanalen.
“I never said that and have never spoken about it.
“What I have heard about Stoke’s interest seems to have come from something I said, but I did not say it.”
Asked if he would be interested if they did make an approach, he said: “It is clear that it is nice and flattering when a club in The Premier League wants you.
“I am talking to Zurich and they say they want me to remain here next season.
“I expect to stay and I am enthusiastic here. We will be playing in Europe now and it feels exciting to maybe play in the Champions League.
“But the transfer window is open, so we will see what happens.”
