Six of the best for England

by Richard Field , 10 June 2009

Wayne Rooney and Jermain Defoe both scored twice as England beat Andorra  6-0 in their World Cup Group Six qualifer at Wembley.

The prolific Rooney took his qualifying goals tally to eight, as England chalked up a seventh consecutive win to surge 10 points clear at the summit of Group Six.

On the day that Fifa finally squared the circle by giving out winners' medals to those England players who did not play in the 1966 World Cup final, the 2009 England vintage was expertedly led by Rooney and Glen Johnson.

Rooney needed just three and a half minutes to score with a header followed by Frank Lampard's effort and a second goal for Rooney in the 39th-minute, before Defoe and Crouch netted in the second half against woeful opposition.

England fancied their luck down the left flank from the start with Ashley Cole unleashing the first cross which goalkeeper Koldo collected without difficulty.

A torrid spell then followed for the goalkeeper who was tested shortly afterwards by a Rooney chip that he managed to tip over the crossbar before saving well at his near post from Theo Walcott.

Koldo's parry reached a diving Rooney at the opposite post but the Manchester United hit-man could only steer his header against the post.

A first goal for England was only a matter of time and Johnson's well flighted cross was headed home, across the goalkeeper, by Rooney.

Steven Gerrard orchestrated many of England's moves into the danger areas as the obvious game plan to breakdown this defence loving side through a mix of pace and slick passing worked to perfection.

Perhaps this whirlwind approach did not give David Beckham, making his 100th England start in place of the suspended Gareth Barry, enough time to consider his options as key passes lacked execution from him.

An indication of the one-way traffic surfaced when England goalkeeper Robert Green finally touched the ball in the 24th-minute to ironic cheers from the supporters.

Johnson was enjoying this encounter with no defending to do in comparison to his Kazakhstan first half nightmare, and the Portsmouth defender again supplied Rooney who managed to turn but scuff his shot wide of the target.

After a brief lull, Lampard netted the second England goal in the 29th-minute after Walcott cut the ball back from the byeline, and the Chelsea midfielder faced a simple side-foot into the net from the centre of the penalty box.

Walcott also looked a more settled performer than the player who was substituted in the heat of Kazakhstan on Saturday.

Andorra finally took a pop at goal in the 32nd-minute with Sergi Moreno trying his luck from 25 yards but it sailed harmlessly high and wide of Green's goal.

The inevitable happened at the other end though as the Johnson-Rooney axis once again unlocked the Andorrans with the right-back crossing for Rooney to slide the ball home from close range.

Things could have been worse in the first half when Oscar Sonejee looked to handle the ball as he jumped for a corner between John Terry and Crouch but Andorra got away with it.

England boss Fabio Capello made two changes for the second half with Rooney and Gerrard replaced by Defoe and Ashley Young as the hard-nosed Italian denied Rooney a chance to grab a hat-trick.

The sight of Young making space before skewing his shot wide against a static defence would not of warmed Rooney, if he was steaming following his withdrawal.

Another rank finish arrived for England when Johnson released Defoe only for the striker to send his shot across the Andorra goal.

Koldo was undoubtedly Andorra's best player and he made a fine stop from Defoe although the striker was marginally offside, but the Tottenham striker made amends with a goal in the 73rd-minute following a header at the far post from Johnson's assist.

Two minutes later and Defoe showed preditory instincts after David Beckham's free-kick was spilled by the Andorra goalkeeper to add a fifth.

Peter Crouch had started for England in the absence of Emile Heskey - who was being wrapped in cotton wool as a booking would have ruled him out of September's meeting with second-placed Croatia - and the lanky Portsmouth striker failed to hit his straps before scoring the final goal of the evening, after a defensive mix-up with nine minutes remaining.

STAR MAN: Wayne Rooney [8.5/10*]. The striker sent England on their way and made sure this game was put to bed before the half time whistle. Click here for ratings and Opta stats.
