Crystal Palace Sean Scannell has targeted Ireland’s international friendlies as a chance to impress manager Giovanni Trapattoni.
“I feel they will definitely qualify for the World Cup and I know they have some friendlies against the likes of South Africa coming up. I would love to get a chance in a game like that.”
The 18-year-old is in Belgium with Ireland’s Under-19 squad ahead of Wednesday’s encounter with Sweden, but feels that he has yet to show his true worth at senior level.
“When I have been with the senior squad I don’t think that I have performed to the level that I actually can reach.
“It’s not that I was shy, but I didn’t really know anybody, and it was a new environment for me. This season coming I’m just going to put everything into making it.
“Next season will be my third as a first-team club player so I am ready.
“The next senior international team would be a big team to get into, but I am going to try. Trapattoni impressed me. At the start it was hard to get into what we wanted because I haven’t had a manager like him before but I eventually I got it, and I felt I have learned a lot from him.”
