Benjani targets City stay

by Adam Marshall , 16 June 2009

Benjani Mwaruwaru has suggested he wants to fight for his place at Manchester City, despite admitting a lasting affection for former club Portsmouth.

The Zimbabwe attacker will find intense competition for a first-team spot next term with Mark Hughes set to continue investing heavily in his squad.

Benjani played only eight times in last season's Premier League, scoring once at Fulham, although he was used during the Uefa Cup run, and seens likely to be offloaded during the close season.

"I still have a contract with Manchester City and I've not received any offers from anyone," he told Soccer Week.

"I enjoy a good relationship with my fellow team-mates, the technical team and the fans and don't see any reason to leave.

"I want to score as many goals as I possibly can for City and look forward to winning trophies and playing in the Champions League with them."

Speaking of Aaron Mokoena's impending switch to Pompey, Benjani displayed his great respect for the South Coast club, where he was a major hit before departing for City.

"Portsmouth are a brilliant club to pay for," he added.

"It's good for Aaron to have made this switch from Blackburn Rovers.

"He has Premiership football pedigree and will enjoy the support of some of the best fans in the world."

Benjani also indicated that he wants to finish his playing days back in Africa, stating: "Jomo Cosmos is my first choice but we will see who else may be interested at the time."
