Portsmouth executive chairman Peter Storrie has insisted he is determined to keep Sol Campbell at the club, on a cut-price contract.
The centre back’s contract expired at the end of the season, and Campbell is now a free agent.
It is understood that the veteran used to earn the club’s highest wages – £100,000 a week – and Storrie has revealed that he plans to offer the defender a new contract, this time based on appearances.
While the former Tottenham and Arsenal star is on holiday, Storrie has said that keeping him at Fratton Park next season could be tough, as the player has already made up his mind regarding his future.
“We have discussed whether he would want to stay or not,” Storrie told reporters. “It would not be on the terms he is on at the moment because, as players get older, there is a different structure.
“It would be based more on appearances than on basic. But at the moment he has gone on holiday. At the moment he is probably looking to make a change, but we will have talks with him when he comes back.”
