With Celtic confirming the news on Tuesday afternoon that Tony Mowbray is Gordon Strachan’s successor, former Celtic goalkeeper Peter Latchford told setanta.com that the new Celtic boss must achieve one particular goal.
With Strachan delivering silverware on a yearly basis for the club, Latchford confessed Mogga must always finish ahead of fierce city rivals Rangers and if they fail to deliver, there is a very high price to pay.
“It always is, at the end of the day that is how he is going to be judged and the silverware he brings in,” Latchford said. “But every Old Firm manager is under the same strain as Tommy Burns found out to his cost.
“You can play the most attractive football under the sun, but if you don’t win anything ultimately you will pay the price.
“But that goes for any manager at any club, you can play the most beautiful football you like, but if you don’t win anything, ultimately you will get the sack.
“The game is all about winning, it’s about winners, and at Celtic I must say you’re expected to win.
“The expectation from the supporters to do well not only at home, but in Europe, is tremendous now.
“So he’s got that pressure, but I think he will bring a difference to the squad that is there.
“I’m sure he’s got his eye on one or two players that he would like to bring in, it will freshen up the squad.”
With the Celtic supporters demanding week-in-week-out their team plays the ‘Celtic way’ Latchford believes Mowbray will bring his unique style of attacking football and use it to deliver what the fans want to see on a weekly basis.
Latchford said: “I think he will because having played it he knows what he’s doing.
“He’s been out there and done that [played the Celtic way] and the game today demands a cautious approach.
“You can’t go out and play the way we used to years ago and end up with scores like 5-4, 4-3 or 4-2, that doesn’t really happen now especially in Europe.
“It’s about bringing in the right players, that when you do unleash them, they can go forward and destroy teams."
