Big Eck enquires about Ferguson

by Tom Kell , 18 June 2009

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish has confirmed his interest in reuniting with former Scotland charge Barry Ferguson.

Ferguson was McLeish’s captain during Scotland’s close-but-no-cigar Euro 2008 qualifying campaign and has subsequently remained in the thoughts of the now Birmingham manager.

The Rangers midfielder has endured a strife-laden season for both club and country having been embroiled in a late-night drinking session while on international duty at the end of March.

His departure has since looked inevitable and now, with Tony Mowbray having left potential destination West Brom, St Andrews looks his most likely option.

McLeish has never been shy in revealing his admiration for Ferguson but has for the first time confirmed that he has set the wheels in motion on a potential summer deal.

“I haven’t made a move for Barry but I have enquired about him,” he said in the Daily Record.

“He is one of a number of players I’m interested in.

“I’m on holiday right now but I’m still working away on some things.”

Ferguson’s only previous experience south of the border came at Blackburn from August 2003 until January 2005.
