Pulis backing for Lawrence

by Tom Walker , 19 June 2009

Tony Pulis feels Liam Lawrence deserves an improved contract after his impressive end to the season following injury.

The Republic of Ireland International picked up an ankle injury early in the campaign after tripping over his dog but impressed on his return as Stoke beat the drop.

Lawrence has revealed his unhappiness at his current wage – the five figure sum falls short of others at the Brtannia Stadium.

“I'm not getting involved in his contract because I leave that to others upstairs,” said Pulis.

"All I know is that he had a smashing end to the season and did so well that he forced his way back into international contention.

"He'll now be dreaming of the World Cup finals, knowing Liam, and the chance to get there with Ireland will have him stoked up for the new season.

"He's been with us almost from the start of this incredible journey of ours and his task now is to keep pace as we try and move things on again."

Meanwhile Salif Diao is no nearer to sorting his future but Pulis is keen for the former Senegal international to stay at the club.

"I would still like to have him around,” he said.

"He's a great role model for any footballer, particularly our African lads, because he has so much stature as a player and a person."
