Wenger: Ramsey must wait to be great

by Robin Hackett , 07 January 2009

Arsene Wenger believes Aaron Ramsey has the quality to become a ‘great player’ – but says he is not yet ready for regular first-team action.

The 18-year-old Wales starlet has shown signs of his quality for Arsenal since his £4.8 million move from Cardiff in the summer, but has yet to establish himself in the first-team.

But Wenger believes that Ramsey will prove he has the ability to succeed at the highest level as soon as he develops his physique.

“He’s just 18 and (Jack) Wilshere is just 17,” he told the club’s official website.

“The Premier League is The Premier League and you need to be a man in this league.

“He can play in some games but, if you’re asking me if he can play every week, every three days, I don’t think he’s ready yet.

“But he shows that he has the quality – that he can do it soon. I really think he will be a great player.”
