Holberg hoses up in Queen's Vase

by Oli Skehan , 19 June 2009

Holberg showed an impressive turn of foot late on to score in the Queen's Vase at Royal Ascot.

Mark Johnston has an enviable record in the race and Holberg was giving him his fifth win in the Group Three.

Winning jockey, Joe Fanning, was winning at Royal Ascot for the third time in what was an incident-packed race.

The 7-1 scorer was sent to the fore early on in the straight before being switched to the rail.

That seemed to spring him into action and he really found top gear two furlongs from the line.

Fanning kept him up to his work in the closing stages to beat the staying-on Irish raider, Yankee Doodle [11-2], by four lengths.

Godolphin's Mastery [7-1] filled third spot another three-quarters of a length in arrears.

"He'd been a good horse all winter and Joe rode him in the Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton where we thought he was our first string," Johnston said. .

"We won the race with Parthenon but Joe missed the kick and didn't want to hassle his stable companion for the lead.

"That meant we didn't see him in his best light. Clearly the further he goes, the better he is.

"I've not thought about the St Leger. He might be a Cup horse next year."
