Maldonado claims British win

by Niamh O'Mahony , 21 June 2009

Pastor Maldonado claimed the Sprint Race at Silverstone on Sunday morning, bringing his car home ahead of Andreas Zuber and Karun Chandhok.

Championship leader Romain Grosjean extended his advantage at the helm of the standings to seven points by ending up fourth, with Nico Hulkenberg and Sergio Perez in the final points positions.

Zuber started on reverse pole, with Maldonago alongside on the first row of the grid, and the action eventually got underway at the second time of asking.

A good start for Maldonago saw him forge ahead of his rival, with Chandhok third and Grojean fourth. But no matter how much the ART man tried to establish any sort of lead, his FMS rival was always able to keep within half a second – at least initially.

Vitaly Petrov moved past Luca Filippi with an impressive move, while Lucas di Grassi had a tough day running wide on a handful occasions included a spin at Becketts which brought yellow flags out.

The final laps of the race, however, were completed almost under Safety Car after a fierce duel between Jerome D’Ambrosio and Giedo Van der Garde ended when they came across Clos stopped out on track.

The Safety Car pulled off just in time for Maldonado to claim the chequered, with a first podium for Ocrean Racing Technology through Chandhok.
