Showcase of tomorrow's stars

by Gareth Maher , 13 June 2009

The 2009 U-21 European Championships kick off on Monday and it will offer a number of players the chance to impress.

While the majoirty of the England squad will already be known due to their appearances in the Premier League, the competition acts as a platform for youngsters from other nations to shine.

For a player that has ambitions of catching the eye of a big club, this is the perfect place for them to show what they can do. And there is a history of players who feature in this competition earning moves off the back of their performances.

In 2007, the Netherlands won it and many of their players were expected to be snapped up. In the end, 17 of their 23 players found new clubs, including Ryan Babel going to Liverpool, Hedwiges Maduro going to Valencia, and Royston Drenthe going to Real Madrid.

Not every player will be looking to switch clubs, many will simply want to stand out for their country and hope that their displays help force their way into the senior side.

This year will see Belarus, England, Finland, Germany, Italy, Serbia, Spain, and Sweden all compete for the top prize, so all eyes will be the star players from those eight countries.

Here are three players in particular to watch out for:

Zoran Tosic - Serbia

Having already signed for Manchester United last season, this tricky winger will not be angling for a move, but he will want to impress Sir Alex Ferguson. He has been tipped to feature a lot more for The Red Devils in the coming campaign and with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving, he will view the right wing as a position that he can fight for. So if he plays well in this tournament, it may benefit his club career.

Mesut Ozil - Germany

Already a key player for Werder Bremen, Ozil is seen by many as the long-term replacement for Diego, who left to join Juventus. The 20-year-old has already made his senior bow with Germany, so he remains on Joachim Low's radar but he will want to use this U-21 Championships to show that he is ready to make the step up and fight for a place in Low's team ahead of next summer's World Cup.

Sebastian Giovinco - Italy

For anyone that saw this classy playmaker in the 2008 Olympics, they will understand why he is so highly rated in his homeland. Hailed as the 'new Del Piero', he has excellent delivery from both feet, never shy to take a shot on, and possesses the necessary skill to create something when a game has gone flat. He is a delight to watch when on top of his game.
