Montgomerie or Olazabal?

by Jay Townsend , 23 January 2009

There is a lot of debate over whether Colin Montgomerie or Jose Maria Olazabal will become the next captain of the European Ryder Cup team.

I think either of those two, whoever is chosen, will make a great captain. Both have tremendous passion for the Ryder Cup and they both have had great careers playing in the Ryder Cup.

Obviously there is some controversy because a meeting took place on January 14 where the committee was supposed to come with a name but they couldn't come up with one so obviously they are in different minds.

A lot of people want it - Sandy Lyle has thrown his name in there, he wants it. Sam Torrance and a couple of other people have said "what about Ian Woosnam?" I know that a lot of people liked the job that Bernhard Langer did so why shouldn't he be captain again? But, I don't think Langer wants it - he is enjoying playing the Champions Tour.

It probably does come down to the two guys - Jose Maria Olazabal and Colin Montgomerie. The funny thing about the Ryder Cup is that you hear a lot of misinformation.

Everyone wants the job, there is only a small group of people that could possibly get it, but they all want it and they say what they can to try and make it known that they want it without outwardly lobbying for it, but there is a lot of political correctness in lobbying for the Ryder Cup captaincy.

I think the argument that Colin Montgomerie is the natural choice for a "home" Ryder Cup because of the American crowd's animosity to him and that as a result Olazabal is the right choice for the Ryder Cup on America soil in 2012 is correct.

It seems to be a foregone conclusion that Montgomerie, whether it be in 2010 or 2012, will be a Ryder Cup captain. I think that he will bring out the best in both teams when he is the captain!
