Poor start cost Rangers in the end

by John Hartson , 14 May 2009

A poor start to Wednesday's game between Hibernian and Rangers cost Walter Smith's side as they only came away with a point when they needed all three.

Rangers needed to come here to Easter Road, get off to a quick start, and get an early goal.

In the first-half, I don't think they passed the ball well, were sloppy at the back, which is uncharacterstic of Madjid Bougherra and David Weir, and I don't think they were anything of a threat up front.

It was an awful first-half from Rangers and on the other hand Hibs were really bright. They were full of confidence after beating Hearts last week.

I just think that Rangers felt they only had to turn up to win the game, but football is not like that. They needed to come out in the second-half and score two goals.

In the end, it was Nacho Novo who was the difference in this game when he was introduced in the second-half. He got the goal as he was brave and threw himself in there.

I think the substitutions (Kyle Lafferty and Nacho Novo coming on after the break) had to be done and I think they will certainly rue the first-half performance, but they did enough in the second-half to win five games of football.

Novo missed two or three great chances. Rangers might feel hard done by with the chance that almost crossed the line, but the rules state that the 'whole' ball has to be over the line. You can see that half to three-quarters of the ball is slightly over the line, but the referee's assistant was in a great position to see it.

I felt Rangers' first-half performance was very, very poor, but in the second-half they were excellent. They kept pushing bodies forward and if they started the game like they started the second-half they would have won three or four nil.
