Bowling let England down

by Jonathan Batty , 23 December 2008

It was a huge disappointment obviously to go away with a series loss but this match always looked like a draw so it was down to the first Test and it was disappointing to lose the series on that one match from such a great position.

I thought we played exceptionally well for the first two or three days of the first Test but I think we showed a bit of naivety and there was a bit of inexperience with the captaincy of Kevin Pietersen.

But to get the series on was a great effort and they should be applauded for that. India is always a hard place to go and especially in those sort of circumstances, but they were outplayed by a very good India side.

I think if the tail is expected to get runs then the batsmen are pretty much not doing their jobs. Ian Bell never really got going but there were some stand-out performances.

Andrew Strauss enjoyed a remarkable achievement in the first Test that will be very hard for him to repeat and KP did well in the second Test. Matt Prior averaged 44 or 45 with the bat but the bowling let England down as they never really got the job done.

Andrew Flintoff was magnificent again and Graeme Swann showed promising signs but Monty Panesar struggled a little bit which was unexpected. There was a lot of pressure on his shoulders and he never really came to the party.

The other bowlers never got going and the Indian batsmen flourished.

I think if you look at the England side it still looks a strong team on paper. The Test series against the West Indies from January through to April will mean them looking to start rebuilding.

They just need a bit more form under their belts but the core of the team will remain the same, we just need a bit more belief and show some of the form we showed last summer.

If England play to the top of their ability, they can beat anybody, they really can but they're just too inconsistent. We're well above mid-table certainly in the world standings but we just need more form and consistency. There's no reason why in 12 months or two years' time, England can't climb to the top of the pack.

The spinners will come into play against West Indies and Swann will look to build on a promising start. Panesar needs to find his form and confidence.

They'll be looking at the warm-up games in the Caribbean to get some form. Alistair Cook looked good at times but needs more consistency as does Bell. Strauss and KP are crucial from a batting perspective.
