Wenger must now show humility

by Pat Dolan , 06 May 2009

Arsenal's Champions League semi-final exit to Manchester United must prompt a rethink of the Gunners' transfer policy.

I think that Arsene Wenger has become a snob in the type of football he demands, and that now is the time to show some humility.

The reason that Sir Alex Ferguson is such a fantastic manager is that he has evolved, he has adapted to the demands of the modern player.

Wenger seems to be on a one-man crusade to bring morality back into football. He received plaudits for not spending as much in transfer fees as his rivals, and it started as a noble intention.

But he continues to follow that policy, and it is now time to change that mindset if Arsenal are to win trophies.

The wages that Arsenal pay are less than rivals, and it means that the players they buy in are often of a lesser standard than their big-four rivals.

Look at the free transfer of Mikael Silvestre from Manchester United. United don’t let good players go, and the Arsenal fans were right to express disquiet at the signing.

Arsenal defended the signing by pointing out his versatility, of how the player can play at both left-back and centre-half.

But Arsenal don’t need versatility in the experienced players they have brought in; they need quality.

When they went to bring in a player with quality, in Andrey Arshavin, they waited so long haggling over the fee that by the time they brought him in, he was ineligible for the Champions League!

Arsene Wenger and Arsenal’s transfer policy has been shown up, and I wonder if Wenger has the humility to change at this late stage of his career. But if he doesn't, he is in danger of losing his great legacy at the club.
