Wenger's Third Coming

by Ray Parlour , 24 February 2009

The current crop of Arsenal youngsters are good for sure. I saw Arsene Wenger’s interview where he said he wants the squad to stay together – this is his third side really.

It started in ‘97/98, that was his first coming really when he first came in. Then he changed it in 2000, 2001, 2002 when the back four were getting old. Now he’s changed it again.

He wants to keep it together but, for me, there’s no-one in that midfield to really take the game to the other team with that drive – a bit like Vieira. He’s not really replaced Flamini either.

Nobody has really taken that position on – Denilson’s very similar to Fabregas, Song’s been in and out so, for me, if he was going to buy a big, experienced player, that was the position to buy – a central midfield holding player who can get around the field and get the ball back.

It's the midfield that they need to be in control of in Tuesday’s game with Roma. It’s a big, big night for people like Song and Denilson.

They need to have a lot of possession and create chances for the guys up front. They need to get the game by the scruff of the neck and say, ‘we need to win this’.
