Kostis key for Casey

by Ronan Rafferty , 24 May 2009

It was great to see Paul Casey winning the BMW PGA Championship on Sunday afternoon because I think he now looks capable of realising his full potential.

And I think the fact that he’s been working with Peter Kostis, his coach in the United States, has really helped him bring every together. It’s really just a case of better focus.

Paul has always been a very good player – we’ve seen that numerous times over the years – but he was always plagued by this frustrating inconsistency. He would always throw in some really bad rounds just as he looked set to really push on. So that was always holding him back a little bit.

But at the moment everything seems to be clicking.

We know he hits the golf ball a very long way and Wentworth was just the perfect golf course for him and his style.

He always looked in total command. He was making the right decisions and playing the right shots. He was excellent on 17 and 18. He looked confident and happy and I suppose that was no surprise given that he won his first PGA Tour event just under a month ago.

So three victories in a month is a great boost for him and he’s got to be delighted with where his game is at right now.

But he’s got to prove himself in the Majors now. People will be expecting better finishes from him - and he’ll be expecting more of himself too.

So, I'm sure he'll really be looking forward to The Open Championship now because Turnberry has been lengthened and is exactly the type of golf course that Paul will like .
