Grays looking for stability

by Steve Bower , 25 September 2008

Grays Athletic in the last seven days has been something of a soap opera. They are owned by Micky Woodward who took them from the Ryman Premier to the Conference and took them into the play-offs. They also went to Wembley and won the FA Trophy.

He appointed himself manager last season but they did not start well last season, they lost to Woking a couple of weeks ago and said he has relinquished the managerial duties and put the club up for sale. He has since held a fans’ forum and has said he is willing to continue as chairman and owner and only yesterday he appointed Wayne Burnett as their new manager. He won’t be in charge, but will take charge on Monday.

They have brought in four new players on loan and it has ball been going on at Grays and it will be interesting to see how they get on against Stevenage.

On other hand, Stevenage were favourites for the title before a ball was kicked and they have Graham Westley in charge. They had a dreadful start, one point from the first twelve, but they have won their last three and there is a lot of expectation around Stevenage.

Jonny Dixon is likely to make his debut and he could be a good signing for Grays. But Stevenage have a settled side now and that is probably why they have been winning of late.

No offence to Grays, but if Stevenage are serious about promotion they have to be going to teams like Grays and getting something. But the way this week has gone in the Blue Square Premier, it shows anyone can beat anyone.
