I think the major reason behind the downfall of Portsmouth this season was the fact they made the mistake of spending money they didn’t have.
Somebody had to pull the reins in, the club couldn’t go on the way it was and, to be honest, there are still some margins that have to be sorted out.
Even now there are still some issues with bills and council fees, so I think Portsmouth fans should prepare themselves for some wrangling, some wheeler-dealing this summer.
Portsmouth may even need to lose one or two more players to completely sort things out.
You look at players like Peter Crouch and Glen Johnson and it is hard to imagine how they are going to hold onto those players.
Paul Hart has done a good job since being appointed, like his opposite number on Monday, Ricky Sbragia, and having kept them up he has fulfilled his goal.
That defeat to Blackburn Rovers was the first time they have been beaten by a team around them in the league.
They’ve faced teams like Stoke and Hull and not been beaten, so that was the first time Paul Hart really would have felt they had failed themselves last weekend.
Paul even admitted that was the worst performance under him, maybe the Pompey players knew they’d done enough.
That has proven to be true of their relegation fight, but with tricky financial times on the horizon, there could be a few individuals in blue who still have more to do to secure their futures on Monday night.
